B Roy's 41 points lead Blazers to Christmas win

On a day when the NBA trotted out its biggest stars — LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony — for its Christmas audience to view, one player stole the show.

The Trail Blazers’ Brandon Roy.

In one of the most sterling performances of his young career, Roy had 41 points and a career-high 16 field goals to lead the suddenly streaking Blazers to an important 107-96 win over division rival Denver on Friday night at the Rose Garden.

Funny thing is, Roy’s performance was one of the rare times he was seen all day.

After opening gifts at 8 a.m., Roy said he virtually sequestered himself from his wife and kids the rest of the day. When his parents arrived later in the day, he left his room to give them their gifts, but again shut himself in his room until it was time to leave for the Rose Garden.

He was drawing off last year’s experience of playing on Christmas, when he went 8 of 20 from the field in a 102-94 home loss to Dallas.

“I just felt like last year I didn’t approach the Christmas Day game like I should,” Roy said. “I enjoyed the day. Today, I said, ‘No. I have a game tonight. I’m going to relax.’ My family understood that.”

Roy said his performance had less to do with proving himself on the national stage and more to do with setting the tone for his team.

“From the jump, I was focused, and I wanted that, because this team feeds off me,” Roy said. “If they see I’m focused, it makes them more relaxed.”
